Kathmandu Valley

Argh, first post in a long time.

Anyway, this image is one I took in Nepal whilst waiting for a bus (a van really) to take us back to our hotel after a day of painting at our project school. The bust was 40 minutes late, which is about usual, and I took this on a short walk around the area.

The afternoon was turning to evening and a few kids came out of their houses to play in the fields with each other. In the background you can see the houses, which look rather impressive for a third world country, but are made of the flimsiest materials. In the very backgrounds you can see the start of the imposing, forest-covered hills that make up most of Nepal.

South Annapurna

I took this on a trek I did in Nepal last year.

I can’t even remember taking this picture but it looks quite nice, I like the sense of depth it creates.

The Modi Khola at Chomrong

Back to some Nepali photos now, this is the famous river that runs through the Annapurna range. Chomrong is one of the largest villages in the region, and is situated on the side of a hill (would probably be called a mountain here in Australia, but to gain mountain status in Nepal it’s got to be 5,000m+). I took this towards the end of a days trekking, when we still had another hour and a half of solid climbing of stairs like this; (not my photo)

Buffalo in the Forest

On the way to the World Peace Pagoda, this buffalo was grazing merrily in the forest.

On Wednesday I’m going down to Dunsborough for a week, and I’ve borrowed a Nikon d90 from my photography teacher, so hopefully I can get a few nice shots down there.

Modi Khola

Another photo taken on the trek, this time of the Modi Khola, the dominant river in the Annapurna region. Melting ice from the glaciers upstream provide the main water source for the river. I was lucky enough to have a (somewhat brief) swim in this river. This photograph was taken from Hinku Cave.

Poon Hill

These 3 shots were taken on a walk from Ghorepani up to Poon Hill, 3210m above sea level. The potentially life-threatening Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) will start to develop above 3000m, so many people trek up Poon Hill to help acclimatise to the altitude. Poon Hill also has some of the best views of the Annapurna’s on offer, and it was unfortunate that the summit was covered with cloud when we went up there. Happy New Year!
